Truly being ugly

Would you ever like to be judged based on the way you look? What if you were "ugly"? I don't mean personally I mean that is the term they use to call you "ugly". In the book "Uglies" by "Scott Westerfeld" these people are forced to be ugly. All they seem to do is look forward to being a pretty, a perfect person.
Why are they judged? So far in the book I haven't found out but I still find it weird how the main character is mostly looking forward to being a pretty. Which to her is only 3months away. I'm guessing there's a certain age for turning into a pretty but I'm still not sure when.
Being judge as I know now usually might be called ugly by a couple of mean kids but the world formally calling you ugly just seems depressing and sad. Maybe further in the book I will find out more and why but as of now I still confused.

  1. I think that the transition from "Uglies to "pretties' is kind of like the transition from childhood to adulthood. Nearly every kid thinks constantly about growing up, and they think it will be better. The truth is, once they become adults, all they ever want to do is go back to youth.
